I had a cordless phone, three nine-volt batteries, and spare change in my pocket. One of the batteries became suddenly, viciously, and intensely hot -- so hot I burnt my fingers just trying to pull it out. I had to drop my drawers and flip 'em upside down to toss the offending battery out. The battery was all sooty and blackened, scorched metal. It was a close call. I still can't figure out exactly what caused it to happen, but the adrenaline (and beer) seem to have interfered with my ability to communicate there for a moment or two...
